Yara Ghana Limited and their partners, Agriculture, Food and Analytical Bacteriology (AFAB) and Northgate have distributed 650 Yara Mila Activa fertilizers to some female farmers within the Techiman South Municipality.
The donation, which is part of Yara’s corporate social responsibility initiatives, and the closing ceremony of the Grow Ghana initiative, took place at the warehouse of Northgate at Bamiri in the Techiman South Municipality of the Bono East Region where over 100 female farmers benefited from the donation
The Grow Ghana initiative, was a project initiated by Yara Ghana in the midst of Covid-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war to address the food crisis in Ghana and the world at large.
The project aimed to reach over 100,000 smallholder farmers, providing them with USD 20 million worth of fertilizers, training and demonstration fields to enhance their farming practices. This comprehensive approach not only strengthens Ghana’s food security but also catalyzes continent-wide commitments to prevent hunger for 60 million people in Africa.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, the erstwhile Brong Ahafo Regional Sales Manager of Yara Ghana, Mr. Alhassan Abubakar, revealed that, the company during the commencement of the Grow Ghana initiative, imported 360,000 bags of Yara Mila Activa fertilizers to cushion farmers.
According to him, the donation of the 650 Yara Mila Fertilizers to female farmers officially ends the Grow Ghana initiative, however he emphasized the company’s commitment to empowering smallholder farmers, particularly women, who play a crucial role in Ghana’s agricultural sector.
“Yara Ghana and AFAB introduced an initiative to help farmers, we imported 360,000 bags of fertilizers to help farmers and the fertilizer was Yara Mila Activa NPK 23 10 5, which is our premium fertilizer for farmers who cultivate maize, millet and rice.
” We realized that the initiative really helped our farmers but some of the fertilizers are still available so we decided to give it out to female farmers within the Techiman South Municipality for free.” He said.
According to him, Yara Ghana recognizes the significant contribution of female farmers to food security and economic development in our communities. This donation is our way of supporting them and ensuring they have the necessary resources to thrive in the upcoming farming season.
“Female farmers contribute a lot to the economy of the country so we decided to give each female farmer here 3 bags of Yara Mila Activa fertilizer of which one bag cost GHc450.00.
“So in all Yara Ghana and our partners are given each female farmer 3 bags of our premium fertilizer worth GHc1,350. 00.” Mr. Alhassan told our reporter.
The Director of Northgate Ghana, Mad. Elizabeth Dwamena, explained that her outfit and Yara Ghana are giving out the fertilizers to female farmers to encourage and motivate them as the new farming season begins.
She assured the farmers that the closing ceremony of the Grow Ghana initiative doesn’t mean Yara products are off the market.
“As Mr. Alhassan has said, the Grow Ghana initiative has officially come to an end, and we intentionally decided to donate these fertilizers to our female farmers to motivate them because we know that there is peace in the house when women are financially stable.
“Today’s closing ceremony doesn’t mean the Yara Mila Activa is out of the market, infact all products from Yara are still available at Northgate.” She said.
Mad. Elizabeth Dwamena, ceased the opportunity to encourage the youth especially young ladies to engage in farming because it is a lucrative venture.
Some of the beneficiaries, expressed gratitude to Yara Ghana for the timely intervention, noting that the fertilizer donation will go a long way in improving the livelihoods of female farmers in the municipality.
“This gesture by Yara Ghana is a testament to their dedication to the development of agriculture in our region.
” We are grateful for their support, we have benefited a lot from Yara Ghana, their products are very good and we are confident that this donation will have a positive impact on the productivity and incomes of our female farmers in the municipality.” They explained.
The Yara Mila Activa fertilizer, which is renowned for its high-quality and balanced nutrient composition, is expected to enhance soil fertility and crop yields, ultimately improving the food security and economic well-being of the beneficiary farmers.
Yara Ghana’s donation is part of its broader initiative to support smallholder farmers across Ghana, with a particular focus on empowering women in the agricultural sector.
