The Techiman South Municipal Health Directorate, has started a mass distribution campaign for long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs)

The distribution, which started on 13th August, 2024 will run until August 20, 2024,with the aim  of combating the spread of malaria and dengue fever in the municipality.

The Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs), according to the World Health Organization have played an important role in the remarkable success in reducing malaria burden over the past decade as they are a core prevention tool, and widely used by people at risk of malaria.

The Techiman South Municipal Health Director, Dr. Kusi Fosuhene in an interview with the media says, the distribution of the LLINs is part of Ghana Health Service efforts to safeguard Ghanaians from malaria and dengue fever infection.

“The motive behind the distribution of the LLIN is to help fight malaria in the country, we have a lot of strategies to combat the spread of malaria and one of them is to release insecticide treated mosquito nets.

“These nets are well treated and it prevents mosquitoes from biting those who sleep in the net. Aside from the usual malaria that we all know, we are also trying to curb the spread of dengue fever in the country and for that matter Techiman.

“The distribution of the nets is across the entire Techiman South Municipality, we have notified all Assembly Members in the various communities in the municipality. He said

Dr. Fosuhene, expressed worry over the fact that some people use the Long-lasting insecticidal nets to fence the gardens.

He therefore appealed to residents to use the nets for its intended purpose, warning that those who use the nets for other purposes should desist from doing so.

“It is very sad that some people will come for the net and use it as a fence for their garden, and they are the very people that will visit hospitals to treat malaria. The population in Techiman is over 250,000 and unfortunately the nets we got can cover only about 50% of the population in Techiman so if you know you won’t be sleeping in the treated mosquito nets, please don’t come for it so that those that really need it will get it.” He said
