Reactions as Mahama promises to pay teachers in rural areas 20% of their salary as an incentive

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Dramani Mahama is under fire over his promise to pay Teachers who agree to serve in a rural school 20% of their salary as an incentive should Ghanaians give the NDC mandate to govern the country again.

According to the former president. “Teachers who agree to serve in a rural school will be paid 20% of their salary as an incentive. This will encourage teachers to accept to serve in rural schools.”

Reacting to this, social media users have questioned the sustainability and possibility of the promise.

Others believe the best thing any president should do is to develop the rural areas and make it attractive to the teachers.

“”How sustainable is this? This was what we did to entice people to go into teaching and nursing way back. And now when we are trying to take it back it has become a problem because they think it is their right to be paid money because they have entered a teacher or nursing training college. Please don’t start something that one day will come back to haunt us.” One said.

“”This is total nonsense what of those in urban? Then every teacher decide to work in the rural schools per what you say what happens to the urban schools, who don’t like money?””

“Hello Your Excellency, Why not channel same funds into developing those areas; ensuring basic social amenities are available, that way you wouldn’t have to provide no incentive or are you saying those remote areas have sealed fate?” One person suggested.

“This is a very good initiative, good motivation for young folks. These are little things we’re talking about. Policies that will change people’s lives forever”

“Masa cheddar should be saying all this things . Not someone who have been president for 6years before ..”

“It’s a must for them to work at the rural areas not a favour they are doing for the country. And it’s your responsibility as a leader to build all rural areas”

“This is basically scratching the problem and not solving it. The solution is to make the resources available and better amenities for the students and teachers as a whole. The real incentive will be to make those places attractive for all teachers. We will continue to waste tax payers money on people who only accept your offer for the money but not to add value or be impactful. Most may end up resenting the students even!”

“Is this even a policy? You’ve been in politics for almost 40yrs and this is the best policy you have for teachers? You were President on two occasions. Wofa, you know in your hearts that managing Ghana is not your forte. Let those who are slightly better handle it. These are challenging times and tou couldn’t improve a single index in a strong economy the late Mills bequeathed to you, how can you handle a difficult one like this? Your skillsets is good somewhere else but definitely not in economic management. At your age, you must be doing sth different in pension.”

“Mr. Prez, we’ve heard many stories in a form of promises and propagandist rhetoric which you ended them up with insults and threats from members of your then cabinet. Our lights are stable now Please, just don’t come back again! We beg you, don’t come back to power again!”

“Teacher remuneration is currently better than when you were president but the system is hard so it has taken all.”

“Give me honeymoon period to put things in place if I win – Mahama So how’s this gonna be possible in just 4 years?”

“This was in your 2012 manifesto”

“Good initiative. Easier said than done”
