NIB releases Ameyaw-Akumfi from detention

The National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) has released former Board Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructural Investment Fund (GIIF), Prof Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, from detention.

It was earlier reported that the former Chairman of the Public Procurement Authority Board was arrested and detained by the NIB.

Ameyaw -Akumfi’s legal counsel, Ken Kuranchie has confirmed that his client has been released from detention.

According to him, the former Minister of Education was detained in connection with an investigation into financial matters during his tenure as the Board Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructural Investment Fund (GIIF).

Ken Kuranchie explained that on Sunday, 23rd February, 2025, a group of men in three pickups arrived and informed him at his residence that he was needed at the NIB.

The Legal Counsel said that Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi followed them voluntarily to the NIB offices in Kawukudi, Accra, where he was detained.

“Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi was at home when these men came. They were in three pickups and informed Prof. that he was needed at the NIB so he followed them voluntarily and upon reaching the NIB offices. The interrogation is related to financial issues that occurred during Prof Ameyaw-Akumfi’s regime as the board chairman at GIIF.” Mr. Ken Kuranchie stated.

Adding that the financial issues are concerned about some approvals that were made during his time in office.

Reports say Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi is being investigated for allegedly authorizing a $2M payment to Africa Investor Holdings, the company behind the failed Accra Sky Train project.

Reports suggest the payment was made before feasibility studies were conducted, and the state is yet to receive the money paid to the company.
