The Minister of Trade and Agribusiness and Member of Parliament for Techiman North, Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has announced plans by the government to establish a cocoa processing factory in the country to add value to Ghana’s cocoa.
She made this known during the 2025 Bono Ahafo Women Cocoa Farmers Union (BAWCOF) Annual Festival, held in Techiman, the Bono East Regional capital, on Tuesday, October 28, 2025. The event, themed “Nurturing Women, Cultivating Life,” was well-attended by traditional leaders, government officials, COCOBOD staff, politicians, women farmers, and stakeholders in the agricultural value chain.
Hon. Ofosu-Adjare commended BAWCOF for empowering thousands of women in cocoa farming, noting that their efforts continue to make a remarkable impact on Ghana’s cocoa sector.
“If you nourish women, life will be cultivated because it is godly for any country to seek the welfare of its women. When women do well, the nation thrives.”
”Through the Brong and Ahafo Women Cooperative Cocoa Farming and Marketing Central Union Limited (BAWCOF), over 7,000 women are now earning a decent living from farming, a remarkable achievement that has significantly contributed to Ghana’s cocoa production sector.” She said.
She further urged members of the cooperative to strictly adhere to all the best cocoa farming practices they have learned in order to increase their yield.
“Women play a critical role in cocoa farming, and I encourage you all to strictly adhere to the best cocoa farming practices you have learned from your Cocoa Health and Extension Division officers. By doing so, you can increase your yields and get the best out of farming.”
Touching on value addition, Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare revealed her vision for local cocoa processing.
“We cannot continue exporting raw cocoa beans and other farm products without adding value. It is my vision that within the next three years, we will establish a cocoa processing factory for BAWCOF and other actors in the cocoa value chain to produce chocolate and other cocoa products locally and create more jobs”
