The vice president of Ghana Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has said he is saddened by the long-standing conflicts among ethnic groups in Bawku.

He bemoaned the lack of development in Bawku and its community due to consistent conflicts in the area.

“As the son of the soil, my heart breaks about what is happening in Bawku, the conflict in Bawku is very unfortunate because we are really one people and we should be together and not fighting.” Bawumia said.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, maintained that conflict leads to poverty so he is optimistic that stakeholders who have been appointed to lead peace talks will help bring the conflict to an end in order to promote development in Bawku and its communities.

“I hope that the initiatives that the government has initiated through the house of chiefs and the Otumfuo that are ongoing will help us bring lasting peace to the Bawku area and therefore help us develop our part of the country because conflict leads to poverty.” Dr. Bawumia added.

The vice president’s comment comes after a gang numbering about fifty (50) invaded the Mempeasem community and kidnapped a 50-year-old man. The gang, however, fled into the bush when the Police responded to the attack on 30th May 2023.

The police managed to rescue the kidnapped victim and retrieved one (1) AK-47 weapon together with 14 rounds of ammunition, seven (7) motorbikes and two (2) bicycles from the scene of the incident. A search for the suspects in the area led to a further retrieval of a bag containing 240 AK-47 ammunition.

On 1st June 2023, the police, while on patrols within the communities, responded to another distress call of an attack by another gang on the Lukula community. The said suspects who were on a rampage, burning houses and shooting randomly, opened fire on the police upon seeing them.

Meanwhile, three persons have been arrested in connection with violent clashes between members of the Gonja and Mamprusi tribes in Lukula, North Gonja District, Savannah Region . The Ghana Police Service has announced.
