Deputy Minister for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mark Okraku-Mantey has called on Musicians, Managers and other stakeholders in the entertainment industry to collaborate with Disc Jockeys (DJs) to ensure that local songs will be played particularly this Christmas festivals.
He said, it is about time Ghanaian songs are played at nightclubs, restaurants, pubs, TV stations, presenters, even churches—it’s intentional.
To this end, Mark Okraku urged artistes to respect DJs to ensure effective collaboration in the industry.
The Deputy Minister made this call at a press briefing held at the Ministry of Information on December 14.
“This is where this whole challenge of not playing Ghana, the root, begins. Let’s coexist; let’s respect each other so we can work together. And so this Christmas; nightclubs, restaurants, pubs, TV stations, presenters, even churches—it’s intentional. Let the Ghanaian music play; it’s about time,” he said.
He argued that no musician can climb the ladder without a DJ so there is the need to respect each other.
“Performers, you need the DJs, the back office people, your managers, and your road managers; respect them. You cannot get to where you want to go without them,” He pleaded.
Ghanaians DJs have over the years complained bitterly of persistent neglect after they promote the musicians to become stars.
According to them, sometimes it is difficult for them to even reach the artistes via phone calls.
But Mark Okraku-Mantey appealed to the DJs to forgive everything and help to promote the industry within their powers.
“DJs, we beg you, let sleeping dogs lie. I know some of the challenges. You say that the industry people do not respect you. You make them stars and then they look down on you afterwards. How long will we go with this? So for the country’s sake, let sleeping dogs lie,” he appealed.
He expressed optimism that if they respect each other the entertainment industry will resurrect and progress again.
