Honeymood plea: If you want us to vote for you, come and say something different – GRNMA tells Mahama

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association(GRNMA) has reacted to the flagbearer of the largest opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, appealing to give him a honeymoon in 2025 when he wins the elections.

According to them, if  he doesn’t have anything for them then he has to advise himself and come back again.

They said, life is unbearable for them so the former president John Dramani Mahama should come out and say something different if he really wants them to vote for him in the December 7, 2024 general elections.

Former president John Dramani Mahama has appealed to the Teacher Unions to give the NDC hooneymood after they emerged winners of the 7th December, 2024 general elections.

According to him, the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) under the leadership of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has created mess in the economy of the country so they will need some time to fix the mess before the economy will come back on its feet.

“I will plead with the Teachers Union, Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), The Teachers’ and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) and all of them, I know all of them are crumbling for allowances, increasing in allowances and so on and so forth, Lets me caution you that in 2025, Insha Allah after we will take over, we will show you the book and the finances of this country and you will realize the harm that the NPP administration has done to Ghana’s economy.” He said

“This country is broke and so we will beg you that when we come to the office, give us a bit of a honey mood, let’s put things in place so that we can bring the economy back on its feet and when we have done that we can see to your demands again.” Mr. Mahama appealed.

Reacting to this, the General Secretary of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Dr. David Tenkorang-Twum said they are expecting better so Mr. Mahama should come back again.

“If they run the country the way they did some years ago when he was in power, then we will not heed to that call. And as a matter of fact we are already struggling, health workers especially nurses. Look at how nurses and midwives are leaving in droves, so I expect something better. If he really wants to come and rule this country again and expect Nurses and Midwives and for that matter health workers to rally behind him then he should say something different. Because our people are leaving, if you don’t have anything for us, I think Mr. Mahama should come again” He said.

Meanwhile, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Dramani Mahama has promised that the next NDC-led government will abolish the quota of enrolling student nurses into Nursing Training Colleges in the country.

According to him, the NDC government will prioritize health care delivery and that they will invest in building more health facilities such as CHPS compounds, Health Centres, new Polyclinics to create jobs for unemployed nurses in the country.

Other organizations and political actors have raised concerns over the former president’s honeymoon comment.

The Director of Communication of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah on X (formerly twitter) post called on Ghanaians to reject Mr. Mahama because he is not ready.

“H.E. Mahama wants a 4-year honeymoon in the unlikely event that he wins the election hmmm. Would you employ someone who says please give me a job, but you must also allow me a honeymoon period to understand the job?” he wrote.

“This is what JM is asking. Hmm H.E. Mahama is just not ready. He is only trying to talk his way into power. Please let us not bother with talkers, we need doers. Reject H.E.Mahama.” Ahiagbah added.
