The immediate past General Manager of the Ebenezer Cooperative Credit Union, Elder Appiah Agyarko, has urged young people to take saving seriously, describing it as a crucial step toward building a secure financial future.
Addressing the media at the Union’s Annual General Meeting, Elder Agyarko, who served the institution for 27 years, from 1997 to 2024, expressed concern over the low participation of the youth in savings activities and cooperative engagements.
He explained that attendance at the AGM clearly revealed this reality. Most of the participants were elderly members, while only a few young people were present. According to him, this trend highlights the need for renewed efforts to encourage the youth to develop financial discipline.
“I have worked with Ebenezer Cooperative Credit Union for 27 years, from 1997 to 2024, and one thing I have observed is that most of the youth do not like saving.
“For instance, during today’s AGM, it was evident that the majority of the participants were elderly people, with only a few youth present. Saving is very important in securing our future, and I want to encourage the youth to cultivate the habit of saving.” He said.
He also raised concerns about what he described as a growing reluctance among young people to work. He noted that many youth often claim there are no jobs in the country, a statement he believes is not entirely accurate.
He explained that while formal employment opportunities may be limited, young people can explore a wide range of productive activities beyond white-collar jobs.
“Another worrying trend is that many of the youth have become reluctant to work, which is very unfortunate. They often hide behind the notion that there are no jobs in the country, which is not entirely true.” He noted
He encouraged the youth to embrace vocational skills, entrepreneurship, and other income-generating activities, stressing that such steps are essential in boosting their economic independence and long-term stability.
“If the youth choose not to rely solely on white-collar jobs, they will find something meaningful to do something that can earn them a decent income and enable them to save.”
