The minority caucus in Parliament has reiterated the call to abolish what they described as draconian taxes immediately.
According to them, businesses are heavily burdened through taxes by the NPP government which affect production and economic growth.
They said, the vice president and the flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has promised to abolish E-levy when he is elected as the president but they can’t wait till that period.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament, the Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson stated that E-levy, emission tax and betting tax must be abolished now.
Adding that the minority will introduce a private member’s bill for the removal of E-levy and emission tax and betting tax.
“The architect behind the taxes has indicated his readiness to abolish the same taxes in future. Mr. Speaker the NDC minority caucus then led by the respectable Hon. Haruna Iddrisu and myself as the ranking member resisted these draconian taxes and collectively voted against them. We did so because businesses are heavily burdened through taxes by President Akufo-Addo and Alhaji Bawumia government” He said.
“On behalf of the NDC minority caucus, I am serving notice today that we will bring a private member’s bill to remove these taxes including the E-levy, emission tax and betting tax. Mr. Speaker, it is only right that that is done, the government has finally agreed to us to abolish these taxes except that while Dr. Bawumia wants it in future, the NDC caucus in parliament wants the removal of these taxes now.” Ato Forson stated.
He indicated the Bank of Ghana is now bankrupt.
The Member of Parliament for Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam Constituency also accused the Governor of Bank of Ghana and his two deputies for illegally and excessively printed money to finance government over bloated expenditure.
“Mr. Speaker, the head of the central Bank is not different, the Bank of Ghana is not different, the Bank of Ghana is now simply bankrupt and exists merely in name. Mr. Speaker, in the year 2022, the Central Bank recorded a colossal loss over GHC60.8, billion and a negative equity of about GHC55,million. Mr. Speaker, the Governor of Bank of Ghana and his two deputies illegally and excessively printed money to finance government over bloated expenditure” He indicated.
