The former Auditor-General, Daniel Yaw Domelevo has bemoaned over excessive taxation and how the revenues are being used by the government.

According to him, Ghana is moving from taxation into robbery instead of to production that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government promised Ghanaians.

Speaking in an interview with Keminni Amanor, host of TV3’s Hot Issues monitored by Elvisanokyenews.com on Sunday, March 17, 2024 Domelevo stated that the botched Agyapa Gold Royalties deal indicates impurities and irregularities in the government.

“In fact we are moving the country from taxation into robbery instead of to production that we were promised. Now we are robbing everybody even your money that you are using to pay them they tax you on it so this is robbery. We are robbing people and using it this way? I can’t get it”

He believes government failure to sanction culprits is the reason people continue to steal from the public coffers.

“That is what I am saying that the system is torelating the irregularities, if it had happened earlier on and people were not tolerated or even the government sanctioning the various people. Remember Martin Amidu did analysis or whatever it is on it and action was taken, people had been deterred but then they came strong and say no we have to do it and the impurity continues and like I told you earlier on, it is the tone at the top who deters public servants.” He said.

He stressed that the money involved in the Agyapa deal is too much which can be used positively for the development of the country.

He asserted that heads were supposed to roll after the audit report to deter people.

“It is just like your father will allow it, if your big brothers are bullying you, you only pray that your father will be alive. If the time the analysis of Agyapa deal was done and people’s head started rolling, I think we will not be told today that so much has been paid and I don’t know since we got to known, I don’t know the date the audit report came out and unfortunately I have not been there, what has happened? If money which has not been paid has been paid, US$12 million is not small money and you are taxing people” He indicated.
