Ghana midfielder Mohammed Kudus has admitted that the Black Stars conceded goals against Egypt in their second match of the Africa Cup of Nation (AFCON) tournament in Ivory Coast because of silly mistakes.
The Black Stars of Ghana secured a 2-2 draw during the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) 2023 group B football match between Ghana and Egypt at Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan, Ivory Coast on January 18, 2024.
The senior National Team of Ghana suffered a 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde in their first match of the AFCON.
Speaking in an interview with the media monitored by Elvisanokyenews.com, the right winger for Premier League club West Ham United stated that the players need to learn from their mistakes in their next match of the tournament.
According to him, they deserved better in their game against the Pharaohs.
“Is a mixed feeling you know, as an attacking player you want your goals to reflect on results but we got a point today, I felt we deserved more because the goals they [Egypt] scored were from some silly mistakes from us which we need to learn from.” The 23-year-old stated.
Mohammed Kudus, who was named the Man of the Match added that they are focusing on the next game to achieve their aim of winning the AFCON.
He also commended his colleagues and encouraged them to work hard and be focused.
“We have put this game aside and then we focus on the next game. We came with energy and enthusiasm, credit to all the boys everyone gave their all. I think we fought and we focused on the next game” He said.
Meanwhile, the head coach of the senior national team Black Stars of Ghana, Chris Hughton said the game was an opportunity for Ghana to get 3 points.
“I felt we deserve to win the gave, after the first performance against Cape Verde, I asked the players for a better performance, more commitment, more running to give us a best chance in a performance to win this game so I don’t think I can fault the player, I don’t think I can fault the attitude. The dressing room is very disciplined. I think it was a good opportunity for us to get 3 points” Chris Hughton .
The Black Stars will face Mozambique in their final Group B game on Monday, January 22.
Some supporters have however expressed optimism that Ghana can qualify to the next stage of the tournament.
“I don’t think Ghanaians should be dissapointed, we are all going to the last game with our calculations on, Mozambique is not an easy team to play but let’s hope for the next game. The tactical team can set us up where we can create more chances” One supporter said.
