The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration of Ghana, Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey has been selected as Secretary-General of the Commonwealth.
Ayorkor Botchwey was selected as the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth at the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, also known as CHOGM 2024 held on October 25, 2024.
The Commonwealth announced this on their social media handle X.
“Today at #CHOGM2024, Commonwealth Heads of Government have selected the Hon Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, currently the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration of Ghana, as the incoming Secretary-General of the Commonwealth.” The post read.
Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey reacting to this said she is overwhelmed by the support of the Commonwealth Heads of Government in selecting me as the incoming Secretary-General of the Commonwealth.
According to her, the work lies ahead.
“Truly humbled by the overwhelming support of the Commonwealth Heads of Government in selecting me as the incoming Secretary-General of the Commonwealth. The work indeed lies ahead!” The Minister wrote on her X.
Adding that she is honoured and humbled by the trust of Commonwealth leaders.
Ayorkor Botchwey stated that despite the workload she is optimistic that they will work together for a New Commonwealth that works for all its citizens.
“I’m honoured and humbled by the trust of Commonwealth leaders. A lot of work lies ahead. But together, we shall work for a New Commonwealth that works for all its citizens.” She indicated.
The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2024 took place in Apia, Samoa from 21-26 October 2024.
