The West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) has released the provisional results of candidates who participated in the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

According to WAEC, a total of 569,236 school candidates and private candidates sat for the exams.

The Council indicated that the subject results of 377 school candidates and 3 private candidates were canceled for the offense of bringing foreign materials into the examination hall or colliding with other candidates.

Adding that entire results of 41 school candidates and one private candidates were also cancelled after their investigations while entire result of 33 school candidates and 3 private candidates have been withheld,

“A total of 569,236 candidates, comprising 282,703 males and 286,533 females from nineteen thousand, five hundred and five (19,505) schools, participated for the school examination. This includes fifty-nine (59) candidates with visual impairments, two hundred and twenty-six (263) with hearing impairments, and are hundred and sixty-one 161 candidates with other test accommodation needs. The examination was conducted at two thousand, one hundred and twenty-three 2,123 centres across the country. Out of the total number, three thousand, eight hundred and forty-five 3,845 candidates were absent.” WAEC statement said.

“The BECE for Private Candidates recorded a total entry figure of one thousand three hundred and ninety (1,390) candidates.  This was made up of seven hundred and fifty (750) males and six hundred and forty (640) females. Fifteen (15) centres ready in the Regional Capitals, were used for the BECE for private candidates. Out of the total number of candidates who entered for the BECE, fifty-seven (57) private candidates were absent.”

Following the completion of investigations into several cases of irregularity detected during the conduct of examination and making of scripts, the Final Awards and Examiners’ Appointment Committee, for the BECE at its 35th meeting held on October 16, 2024 appeared as follows:

1. Cancellation of subject results of 377 school candidates and 3 private candidates for the offense of bringing foreign materials into the examination hall or colliding with other candidates.
2. Cancellation of entire results of 41 school candidates and one private candidate.
3. Withholding the entire result of 33 school candidates and 3 private candidates.

Meanwhile, some subject results from 149 schools have been withheld due to reported malpractices. The withheld results may be cancelled or released based on the outcome of the investigations.
