The Minority in Parliament has described the Ministry of Health (MoH) decision to recruit 15,200 nurses and midwives as a political gimmick.

They said the recruitment exercise is an election strategy to deceive the graduate nurses who have suffered unemployment in many years.

“It is nothing more than an electionioaring strategy to decieve graduate Nurses who have had to suffer in some cases 4 years of unemployment to re-elect to power a government that if elected, will wait till another election cycle before open recruitment portals into the Ghana Health Service. This political gimmickry with recruitment into Ghana Health services has precedents which can easily be cited.” The Ranking Member on the Health Committee of Parliament, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh said this when he addressed journalists.

The Ministry in a statement said “The Ministry of Health wishes to inform the general public that the Ministry of Finance has issued a Financial Clearance to recruit 15,200 Nurses and Midwives. Qualified applicants are requested to formally apply on the Ministry of Health online application portal by logging-in onto https://hr.moh.gov.gh and follow the instructions to select the preferred agency under the Ministry.”

But the minority caucus says the government used the same strategy in 2020 and left the graduates nurses and midwives to suffer unemployment after they won the elections so their aim is to win the elections.

He claimed the NPP government will subject the  health service graduates to suffer a similar fate if they win the 2024 elections.

“In the first time of President Akufo-Addo’s government of which Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was the head of the Economic Management team, general recruitment of health workers especially Nurses and Midwives was deferred to a period spanning November 4 to November 5, 2020. A few weeks to the elections as part of campaign strategy. Once voted into office, health service graduates had to suffer a similar fate of waiting for 4 year to be recruited into the Ghana Health Service resulting in a poor health care delivery.” He added.
