Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu, the spokesperson of the National Chief Imam believes the flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia consistent visit to churches to share his vision ahead of the 2024 general elections is in the right direction.

He said Dr. Bawumia knows that even if all Muslims in Ghana vote for him he can not win election so it is a political tactic and doesn’t make him less Muslim.

“He is a politician, I am ot a politician, he is doing political tactics. Dr. Bawumia knows that even if all Muslims in this country vote for him he can not win the election because of the statistics we have. So politically it doesn’t make sense to be on one side, so he is doing politics and people must view him from the angle of his political strategy to be able to get the vote from every corner like all politicians do.” Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu said in an interview with GhOne monitored by Elvisanokyenews.com.

He also indicated that politicians who are also christians visit the Chief Imam and request his blessings.

“They do come to Muslims and some of them come to the Chief Imam and request prayer from him. The Chief Imam lays hands on politicians. I have met the Chief Imam and christian politicians come and they squat and give their heads to the Chief Imam to hold them and pray. It is because of how they see him but it doesn’t make them less christians.” He added.

“It is not wrong if there are good reasons why for example you find me in church, I have entered in church with the Chief Imam at Catholic Cathedral on a certain anniversary when he was invited. Apart from that he has entered Christ the King. Because of my inter-faith engagement, I have entered Presbyterian Church and gave lectures but it doesn’t make me less a Muslim.”

“Priests come to Chief Imam’s place to greet him, when they are going they say they want to say a prayer for him and he (Chief Imam) will say let them pray. Rev. Lawrence Tetteh asked the Chief Imam if he wanted to pray for him and he held his hand and prayed, and as he was praying the Chief Imam said amen to it. Those are symbolic to show friendship.”
