Former President John Dramani Mahama has criticised the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government for failing to pay National Service personnel allowances for about five months.

He said the GH¢715.57 allowances to the service personnel is not even enough in this current economic hardship and so delay in payment will make life unbearable for them.

According to him, such an incident was not recorded in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.

The management of the National Service Scheme (NSS) in 2023, raised the allowance from GH¢559.04 to GH¢715.57.

The flagbearer of the NDC criticism comes after unpaid National Service personnel have threatened to sue the National Service Secretariat (NSS) over their unpaid allowances.

“As of March, the evaluation forms have not come out, in our institution people are telling us that their evaluation forms are not in, they don’t understand what is going on? Several people all over the country have not been paid and now talk about data breach which is a serious issue” One of the convenors of the unpaid NSS personnel Clenan Tamakloe said.

“We are giving them up to the end of the month to pay the arrears. If they don’t we are planning a strike, we will also follow up in the lawsuit”He indicated.

Addressing party supporters as part of the former president’s “Building the Ghana We Want Tour” said the situation is very alarming.

“During the NDC regime, there wasn’t any complaint of delay in NSS allowances for even one month but today the personnel are complaining about five months delay in NSS allowances payment and the money (NSS allowances) is not even enough, just small money. ” Mr. Mahama said.

According to him, the Nana Addo and Bawumia led NPP government has created a mess in the economy.

“What type of government is this? Everything is not improving, our finances are not good, we have been burdened with debt that we cannot pay and the little amount for the service personnel you can not pay” He stated.
