The Roads and Highways Minister, Francis Asenso-Boakye has said that fixing the road network in Kumasi is central to the socio-economic development of the country.
According to him, a robust road infrastructure in Kumasi is critical to national development considering the strategic location of the city which serves as a linkage to several other cities and a business hub.
Ashanti Region is not excluded from regions in the country that witness deplorable road networks.
The Minister made these remarks on Monday, March 18 2024, when he paid a courtesy call on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei-Tutu II, at the Manhyia Palace to seeks his blessings, and also held discussions with the Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah at the Regional Coordinating Council.
The visit forms part of the Minister’s 3-day inspection tour of the Ashanti, Ahafo and Bono regions to inspect the state of road infrastructure.
Many political actors particularly, the largest opposition, National Democratic Congress (NDC) have accused the government of taking the people of Ashanti region for granted.
But the Road Minister and the Member of Parliament for Bantama constituency has said the government is committed to provide good roads infrastruture to the region.
Pilling works has commenced on the Anomangye, New Magazine and Abusuakruwaa overpass which forms part of the Suame Interchange Project.
Also the construction of a 15km local roads network to serve as alternative routes during the construction of the Suame Interchange is about 40% completed.
These were disclosed when the Roads Minister, Francis Asenso-Boakye inspected the project as part of his working visit to the Ashanti Region.
The Minister said the Suame Interchange Project is the single biggest road project in the country in terms of scope and function. Asenso-Boakye expressed satisfaction with the work of the contractor, Rango Construction Co. Ltd and said the project was high on the agenda of the government.
