A section of Ghanaians are not happy with the Accra High Court ruling that six people including three soldiers should be sentenced to death by hanging for engaging in an alleged coup plotting.

According to them, their sentences are too draconian in this modern day.

Accra High Court on Wednesday, January 24, 2024 convicted 6 people to death by hanging for their involment in an alleged coup plotting against the government.

The six people include Donya Kafui, a blacksmith; Bright Allan Debra Ofosu, a fleet manager; Johannes Zikpi, a civilian employee with the army, Warrant Officer II Esther Saan Dekuwine; Lance Corp. Ali Solomon and Corp, Sylvester Akampewon  were found guilty of “conspiracy to commit high treason and treason”.

The court also acquitted Police Chief Benjamin Agordzo, army officer Col. Samuel Kodzo Gameli and junior military officer Corp. Seidu Abubakar.

Reacting to the ruling, some Ghanaians said the state should find a different deterrent punishment against the accused people than sentencing them to death.

One person stated that the performance of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government under the leadership of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is worse than a coup so the court should temper justice with mercy.

“The judgement is too harsh because if we look at what the president is doing is worse than a coup against the citizens, even the coup has some positive aspects so the judgement is too harsh” He said.

Another person also suggested that they should remove the clothes of the six people and leave them naked on the streets rather than hanging them.

“I don’t agree with the jugement, to me they should remove their clothes and leave them naked. We are civilians now so death sentence is not good”

Others are also on the view that there should be a different deterrent punishment for them to scare other people than a death sentence.

However, some Ghanaians have different views on the ruling.

According to this section, most African countries are still suffering because of the coup. They said, coups affect development in every nation so nobody should entertain or defend such people in society.

“We are all suffering but doing this will create a lot of issues in the country and innocent people would eventually lose their lives. I wish former president Jerry John Rawlings is alive to deal with these country wreckers mercilessly” Angry woman stated.

Meanwhile, a criminologist, Takyi Akonnor has commended the Judges for ensuring that rule of law is taking its course.

He said the democracy of the country is strengthening.
