Some players of the Ghana national team, Black Stars have rendered unqualified apology to Ghanaians for failing to meet the expectation of Ghanaians in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nation (AFCON) tournament in

Ghana needed a win to qualify from group-stage but their last game against Mozambique at Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan, Ivory Coast today, January 22, 2024 ended with a 2-2 draw.

Ghana suffered a 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde in their first match of the AFCON and secured a 2-2 draw during their second match between Egypt at Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan, Ivory Coast

Two points in three matches resulted in Ghana exit in the 2023 AFCON tournament.

After their abysmal performance, Ghanaians have angrily descended on them for disappointing them.

Some of the players on social media platforms have said they are sorry for not meeting the expectations of Ghanaians.

According to Alexander Kwabena Baidoo Djiku who plays as a centre-back for Süper Lig club Fenerbahçe and the Ghana national team, Words will certainly not be enough to erase the disillusionment. He said they are disappointed and very sorry for our Ghanaian people that we have failed at this stage of competition.

“Words will certainly not be enough to erase the disillusionment. We are disappointed and very sorry for our Ghanaian people that we have failed at this stage of competition. But if you only knew how grateful we are to have been supported by you, our Ghanaian fans” Black Stars defender, Alexander Djiku wrote.

Joseph Paintsil who plays as an attacking midfielder or a left winger for Belgian club Genk and the Ghana national team also expressed sincere disappointment for not bringing joy to the faces of Ghanaians in the AFCON tournament.

“Sincere apologies to the good people of Ghana. We are truly sorry for not meeting your expectations. Important lessons to take away from this unforgettable experience. Thank you for coming through with your support in our low moments.” Joseph Paintsil, Black Stars defender.

According to Mohammed Salisu, group-stage exit is not what they wanted therefore he apologized to Ghanaians. Adding that they will get back stronger and better.

“Sincere apologies to our Ghanaian people for this disappointment, this is not the way we wanted it, we thank you for your support as we hope to get back stronger and better” Mohammed Salisu, Black Stars centre-back said.

Majeed Ashimeru who plays as a midfielder for Belgian Pro League club Anderlecht and the Ghana national team has also broken his silence after the tournament.

He said representing Ghana is a childhood dream that motivates him to give his best. According to him, the Black Stars deserve better so the players are determined to correct their mistakes and get back better.

“Representing Ghana is a childhood dream that motivates me to give my best. I’m committed to bringing joy to our fans and elevating Ghana’s standing in the world. The Black Stars deserve better, and we’re determined to correct our course.

A heartfelt thank you to YOU, our incredible fans, for standing by us with unwavering support and prayers. May God bless and protect each one of us.” Majeed Ashimeru, Black Stars midfielder disclosed.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced that Chris Hughton has been sacked from his post as the Black Stars coach following Ghana’s abysmal performance in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations  (AFCON) tournament in Ivory Coast which ended with a group stage exit without a win in three games.

Many Ghanaians are suggesting that retired footballers such as Asamoah Gyan, Michael Essiean should be given the opportunity as Black Stars coach and handle GFA to lift the National team higher.
