Former president John Dramani Mahama has heavily descended on the president of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for bitterly complaining about his (Mahama) failure to congratulate him on his victory in the 2020 election.
According to Mr. Mahama, it is sad that President Akufo-Addo has not uttered even a word of sympathy to the bereaved families of eight (8), who lost their lives during the 2020 elections and alo allowing the perpetrators of these murders to walk scout free.
President Akuffo-Addo has said he is still waiting for his main opponent in the 2020 election to congratulate him on my victory.
Delivering an address ahead of January 8, constitution day, Nana Addo stated that to strengthen the democracy and the peace and stability of the nation, there should be no lingering doubt about the legitimacy of the election and the winning candidate.
“At the end of it all, there should be no lingering doubt about the legitimacy of the election and the winning candidate, on the conclusion of the process, should receive the unalloyed support of all. That is how we can strengthen our democracy and the peace and stability of our nation. On a lighter note, three years on, I’m still waiting for my main opponent in the 2020 election to congratulate me on my victory.” The president said.
In a response to this, the flagbearer of the NNational Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama in a statement to commemorate the 31st anniversary of the 4th Republic said, the use of thugs and rogue element within the security to disrupt elections in some parts of the country, as occurred in the 2020 elections, leading to the loss of eight (8) lives was very pathetic and infamy.
“The use of thugs and rogue element within the security to disrupt elections in some parts of the country, as occurred in the 2020 elections, leading to the loss of eight (8) lives, will forever be remembered as Ghana’s day of infamy and an indelible blemish on our democratic credentials established over the last 32 years of constitutional rules” He said.
“On a rather sad note, it is unconscionable that three years after these tragic events, our president, Nana Akufo-Addo, has not uttered even a word of sympathy to the bereaved families. The perpetrators of these murders continue to walk as free men and still hold on to positions of authority and power” Mr. Mahama replied Nana Addo.
He called on the government to ensure this year’s elections will be peaceful without loss of life.
“This government must appreciate that they have an obligation to guarantee peaceful elections this year, and the loss of even one Ghanaian life will not be countenanced” Mahama added.
Meanwhile, Nana Addo Dankwah Akuffo-Addo has promised to do whatever is required of him as the Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces to ensure that the 7th December, 2024 elections will be free, fair and transparent.
“I swore an oath on 7th January 2017 and again, four years later, on 7th January 2021 to be faithful and true to the republic of Ghana and preserve, protect and defend the Constitution. I shall continue to do just that. It will not be under my watch that any adventurer will seek to torpedo the democratic path on which we have embarked. I will help see to it that we have a free and fair and transparent election in December 2024.” He assured.
