Why are the WAEC core subject results disappointing or showing a decline?

1. According to research, the results released accurately represent the actual performance of candidates. But this raises a question: how do we explain the previous excellent results that suggested students were performing exceptionally well?
2. Research indicated that there is a significant gap between this year’s performance and that of previous years, as confirmed by statistics published by WAEC.
3. Others have suggested that in the past, fake or manipulated results may have been sent from the examination centers to WAEC’s office, and efforts by WAEC to distinguish genuine scripts from falsified ones were not always successful.
4. So, what should be done next? You may recall that WAEC strengthened its operations by imposing strict penalties, including the prosecution of teachers involved in examination malpractice.
5. These measures helped restore some discipline and contributed to making this year’s examination relatively free from cheating.
6. There is also a need to critically examine basic school assessments, because many students entering Senior High School with weak aggregates require additional academic support. How can such poor foundational grades suddenly transform into excellent results at the SHS level?
7. Parents must also make an effort to support their children. Teachers alone cannot transform struggling students into high performers within a short academic period.
