The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has threatened to embark on a nationwide strike if the government includes newly recruited nurses in its directive suspending all public service appointments made after December 7, 2024.
According to the President of GRNMA, Mrs Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo the services they are providing is essential and for that matter they need to be exempted from the mass suspension.
Speaking in an interview, she said they will stand in solidarity with their colleagues if the government fails to listen to their request.
“The services they are providing are essential and this is not the time for us to be suspending people. It has come as a surprise that the Director General is indicating that all those who did not find themselves on the payroll as at January, 2025 should be suspended. And this directive we want to believe is immediate and we are going to see Divisional Directors and Regional Health Directors putting into force this directive.” She said.
Adding that “and we are saying that if they go ahead and suspend, we will have no choice but to stand in solidarity with our colleagues. We will not hesitate to embark on series of industrial actions that we know will definitely affect the work that we are doing, and therefore, we are humbly requesting all those who have the power to do the needful that they should rescind their decisions, make it clear and exempt those who have to be exempted. And in our case I think Nurses and Midwives should stay at their posts and do their work.”
Ofori-Ampofo again described the decision by the government as unfair.
“We think that it is unfair, that should not happen and therefore, we are calling on the government, on our mother Ministry which is the Ministry of Health and the largest agency within the Health Services which is the Ghana Health Service to please rescind their decisions in relation to the Nurses and Midwives because we need them there.” She lamented.
