New Patriotic Party (NPP) Stewart, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko debunked claims that the 2024 US presidential election results will have influence in Ghana’s 2024 presidential election scheduled for December 7th.
Former US president Donald Trump has been elected again as the president of the United States of America.
The businessman defeated Vice President Kamala Harris who was the leader of the Democrats.
Some believe the US election results will reflect in Ghana’s polls but Gabby Otchere-Darko pooed-pooed the argument.
In a post on X, he said “I see my tweet about a voter describing Kamala Harris as “representing change” has excited some Ghanaians! Good for them! We should be careful about over-reading into the US elections. Trump won in 2016. John Mahama lost in 2016 to Akufo-Addo. In 2020, Trump lost his attempt for a 2nd term (like Mahama in 2016).”
“Trump lost even though his MANAGEMENT of the US ECONOMY was accepted by all as good. He lost perhaps more on Covid mismanagement and Biden was seen as a more credible alternative. In 2020, John Mahama lost again to Akufo-Addo in Mahama’s 2nd attempt for a 2nd term. This is 2024, Trump has won in his 2nd attempt for a 2nd term; what JM failed to do. The economy was a major issue in the US race; Trump came to the race with a good record on the economy to draw from.”
“Harris became a substitute candidate half way through Biden’s campaign and she did not contest any primaries to test her own grassroots popularity. Both Bawumia and Mahama won the endorsement of their own party grassroots. John Mahama and Dr Bawumia have both been vice presidents. John Mahama has been president before but suffered the biggest defeat of any incumbent in Ghana’s history. He failed mainly because of what voters saw as his bad handling of the economy, including dumsor. The character/integrity of the leader, jobs, the economy and roads are the major concerns of Ghanaians today. Which candidate the majority of Ghanaian voters believe they can trust to tackle these concerns is the one most likely to win.”
If American election results automatically influenced Ghana’s a month after, Akufo-Addo would have lost in 2020 and Mahama would have had his second term in 2016 like Obama did in 2012 or won in 2020 like Trump has in 2024. Trump has won with all his flaws.
What does that mean to the world? Well, focus on your grassroots organisation, addressing the concerns of voters, on winning the integrity race and your D-Day strategy. Ghanaians will decide and not Americans. And, whoever wins, the nation, as always, will accept, after a small testosterone booster, and move on. That’s the beauty of democracy. Let Ghana win.
