Following the violent disorder in UK towns and cities over the weekend leading to the arrest of 150 people, an emergency meeting is scheduled to take place at Downing Street today Monday, August 5, 2024.
The widespread unrest and violent confrontations involved far-right anti-immigration groups.
This comes after UK Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer condemned an attack on a Asylum seekers hotel in Rotherham and assured that the perpetrators will face the full force of the law.
“I actually condemn the far-right thuggery we saw this weekend. Be note that those who participated in this thuggery will face full force of the law. The police will do their work to ensure sanity. I guarantee you will regret taking part in this disorder, whether directly or those whipping up this action online and then running away themselves,” he said. “This is not a protest, it is organized, violent thuggery and it has no place on our streets or online.” Sir Keir Starmer said.
According to the Prime Minister, the thuggery was targeted on Muslim communities and Mosques.
Adding that he won’t shy away from calling it what it is: far-right thuggery.
“We have seen Muslim communities targeted, attacks on mosques. Other minority communities singled out, Nazi salutes in the street, attacks on the police, wanton violence alongside racist rhetoric, so no, I won’t shy away from calling it what it is: far-right thuggery.” The Prime Minister stated.
Some parts of the UK such as Rotherham, Middlesbrough, Bolton and others witnessed widespread of violence over the weekend.
According to a BBC report, the meeting will be held in the Cabinet Office Briefing Room A on Whitehall., commonly called a Cobra meeting, where ministers, civil servants, law enforcement, intelligence officials, and other relevant parties will convene to address the crisis.
The meeting of the emergency response committee is aimed at updating the government of the violence and finding a lasting solution to the problem.
