Deputy Minister for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mark Okraku-Mantey, has said people who are questioning him about what he has done as a Deputy Minister might be ignorant of the deputy ministerial role in the 1992 constitution of Ghana or have decided not to tell the truth.
He said Deputy Ministers don’t have power to implement policies and that former President John Dramani Mahama should come and tell Ghanaians what he did during his term as a Vice President.
Speaking in an interview with Andy Dosty on Daybreak Hitz show, Okraku-Mantey stated that people should not take the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia statement that he is like a driver’s mate for granted.
“The roles of Ministers and their Deputies are enshrined in the 1992 constitution but I see that people are using emotions to speak. The deputy Minister’s role is actually somebody who gives support to the main Minister. That is why I am saying that Dr. Bawumia’s statement that he is like a driver’s mate should not be taken for granted. Even the NDC people they know.” He said.
“When ex-president John Mahama should tell us what he did as a vice president. You can only share your ideas. That is why the things I am going to talk about what I have done, I can only speak and tell you that I convinced my boss and in the hierarchy of anybody who has worked in an organization knows that before there is any implementation, your boss has to sanction first.” Okraku Mantey added.
According to him, the best question people should ask is what your Ministry has done and not what you have done as a Deputy Minister.
“That is why we have something called change of command, span of control in every organization. So this thing about as the Deputy Minister what has he done? You should be asking questions like what has your Ministry done? What has your government done? Not what you the Deputy Minister has done because the Deputy Minister does not have power to do.”
