A tipper truck loaded with over 700 bags of cocoa, has completely destroyed the amuaku bridge at the Amenfi West Municipality in the Western Region of Ghana.
The mishap occurred last Thursday, 15th November, 2024 when the truck, transporting the over 700 bags of cocoa from Mumuni to Samreboi lost control while navigating the bridge. Eyewitnesses reported that the truck was moving at a cautious speed before it tipped over, sending the massive load crashing onto the bridge’s structure.
The incident, is not the first of its kind on the bridge as the amuaku bridge was repaired in September when it was partially destroyed by a truck with a heavy machine.
The collapse of the bridge has not only halted transportation across the area but also disrupted economic activities for farmers and traders who depend on the bridge to access markets and transport goods.
According to reports, officials from the Amenfi West Municipal Assembly have visited the site to assess the extent of the damage while assuring the public that, efforts would be made to provide a temporary passage while plans for a permanent reconstruction of the bridge are expedited.
This accident, have left residents and commuters alike to ask questions about the effectiveness of teh weight regulations and the the culture of maintenance culture in the country.
Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing to determine if negligence played a role in the accident.
No injuries were reported, but the financial loss from the damaged cocoa and the bridge’s destruction is expected to be substantial.
