The former General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Nana Yaa Jantuah has strongly opposed The Electoral Commission (EC) proposal to change Ghana’s Presidential and Parliamentary elections from December 7 to November 7, 2024.
The 2024 general elections are crucial and the date is close so moving the date from December 7 to November 7 will bring some implications which can eventually create chaos in the country.
According to her, the sanctity of the nation is very important so the Electoral Commission (EC) should not do anything that will negatively affect the peace and stability in the country.
The Electoral Commission (EC) has proposed that both Presidential and Parliamentary elections should be moved from December 7 to November 7, 2024.
According to the EC, the proposal is aimed at providing ample time for the commission to effectively manage its operations, particularly in the event of a run-off.
These proposals were presented during the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting held on Monday, January 22, 2024.
Additionally, the EC is suggesting that election days should be designated as national holidays to enhance public participation in the electoral process.
But speaking on UTV morning show, Nana Yaa Jantuah stated that Ghanaians are not ready to go for elections in November.
Adding that the EC is not competent because these things should have been done a long time ago.
“Is the December 7 not constitutional provision, if it is constitutional provision then you can get up to say you are changing it, ” Dr. Bossman Asare said they decided to change the date in 2020 and it is four years now then it means the EC is incompetent. Even there is no proper discussion at the IPAC meeting, the EC imposes her decision on them.” She stated.
The CPP member thinks Ghanaians can not trust the EC readiness for the 2024 general elections.
“Why is the EC so eager to hold the elections on November 7, at this time are they ready? We can not take their words for it” She quizzed.
Nana Yaa suggested that the EC should maintain December 7 for the 2024 general elections and open dialogue for the proposed date in 2025.
“If they still insist they want to hold elections on November 7, they allow us to finish this election and start discussion in 2025 but as it stands now we are not ready for any complications, Ghanaians should rise against this, this government can not use the EC to come and create confusion in this country. We should stop this because this nation is more important than any human being, the sanctity of this nation is key and everybody should know that” She said.
Meanwhile, the Seventh-day Adventist church (SDA) has petitioned the Electoral Commission to make an amendment to the December 7, 2024 general elections.
They said, 7th December falls on Saturday, which according to the church is Sabbath and that it should be observed as a holy day dedicated to the worship of God.
“The preposition from the Aventist church is to help deepen electoral democracy and ensure that none is excluded from participating in the electoral process.”
