“Dear Gareth Southgate, we wish you all the best for the future and we hope you are proud of the past eight years and the adventures you took England on. Thanks for the memories, and thanks for giving the lions pride.”

“Thank you Gareth. After years of average performances at major tournaments you gave us some brilliant nights on the big occasions. You brought the team together and helped them build a platform to show the power of their voices off the pitch. You reminded us of the sartorial significance of a waistcoat and, most importantly, you did it all at the same time as being a thoroughly decent bloke ”

“Wishing Gareth Southgate all the very best in the future. He brought pride, respect and a togetherness to @England that we hadn’t seen for a long time. He was close, very close to footballing immmortality and he always did the job with humility, decency and dignity. Thank you, Gareth.”

“I join with everyone today in saying thank you to both Gareth Southgate and his team for all they have achieved and for laying the foundations for future success.”

“Gareth Southgate changed the mentality of English football. He leaves us believing again. I’ve seen people saying that losing two finals will leave a mark. Let’s reframe that… Making two finals will leave a mark. Thank you Gareth.”

“It is perfectly possible to think Gareth Southgate is a good guy (always on the right side of issues) and a decent manager. AND to think, at the same time, that tactical caution may have prevented England winning the real crunch matches. In fact, that’s exactly what I DO think.”

“There is no doubt that Gareth Southgate changed the England Men’s team for the better! He has transformed our standing on the world stage. He deserves so much credit and thanks from every supporter!”

“Gareth Southgate’s greatest achievement was not on the pitch, but in the standard that he has set for how a role-model and representative of our country should conduct themselves. In a job which has subjected him to a degree of national scrutiny and criticism that most people will never appreciate, he has been a real mensch, remaining dignified, respectful and considerate throughout. His legacy will be a generation of young people who have learned from him that leadership is primarily about decency, integrity and bringing honour to others. That is worth more to our country than any trophy. The crown of a good name supersedes all. Thank you, Gareth.”
