Techiman South: GNAPS launches week-long celebration on AI in education

The Ghana National Association of Private Schools (GNAPS), Techiman South, has officially launched this year’s GNAPS Week celebrations under the theme “Artificial Intelligence, a Tool for Driving Education in the 21st Century.”

The grand opening ceremony took place at the Ohene Ameyaw Park, drawing key stakeholders from the education sector, government representatives, including the media

The celebration aims to highlight the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in shaping Ghana’s education system. Speaking at the event, the Techiman South Metropolitan President of GNAPS, Mr. Charles Afena stressed on the urgent need for AI integration in schools to enhance learning, teaching, and administrative efficiency.

Mr. Charles Afena urged teachers and learners to fully embrace the use of AI in the teaching and learning process.

“We celebrate this week every year, this year’s celebrations commenced on 23rd February, 2025. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Artificial Intelligence: a Tool for Driving Education in the 21st Century.” With the emergence of Artificial Intelligence, many aspects of life, including teaching and learning, have become easier. Therefore, we find it appropriate to fully integrate AI into our education system.”

“We are urging teachers and learners alike to fully embrace the integration of AI in their daily classroom activities, as it can help create a more conducive learning environment while enhancing teaching and learning in schools.” He said.

However, he expressed disappointment that most private schools within the metropolis failed to participate in the celebrations, describing the situation as unfortunate.

“Unfortunately, many private schools did not participate in this year’s celebrations. However, we appreciate the commitment and active involvement of the schools that took part. We encourage all private schools to fully engage not only in GNAPS Week but in all activities organized by GNAPS.”

The Bono East Regional President of GNAPS, Prince Sorenga, called on teachers and parents to embrace the use of AI in the teaching and learning process.

“We are moving from the mere use of computers to explore advanced technologies and systems that can enhance teaching and learning. Artificial Intelligence now drives the world, and it is time for Ghana to fully embrace it

“The schools should establish well-equipped computer laboratories, train teachers, and provide them with the necessary resources and competencies to effectively utilize AI. Parents must also acknowledge that education has evolved beyond traditional reading and writing methods. Therefore, they should support schools whenever the need arises.” He stated.

He also urged education stakeholders, particularly the government, to support not only public educational institutions but also private schools in the country’s efforts to integrate AI into the education system.

“All stakeholders, especially the Ministry of Education through the central government, must prioritize IT and AI by making conscious efforts to equip both private and public basic schools, senior high schools, and tertiary institutions across the country.

“The 21st-century child cannot be educated using outdated methods. It is essential that we integrate Artificial Intelligence into our education system to prepare students for the future.” He said

On his part, the Techiman South Metropolitan Education Director, Pastor Isaac Amankwaa, disclosed that as part of efforts to integrate Artificial Intelligence into the teaching and learning process, the directorate will organize a workshop on March 31, 2025, to train teachers on the use of AI in preparing lesson notes and other teaching activities.

“We are putting measures in place to ensure that all teachers within the metropolis acquire the requisite skills and knowledge in ICT, as well as the use of Artificial Intelligence to prepare their lesson notes.

“The Techiman Education Directorate has already invited experts to train our teachers on integrating AI into the teaching process. Additionally, we will be holding a workshop for all teachers on March 31. We strongly believe that from April 1, teachers within Techiman South will fully embrace the use of AI in their teaching practices.” He said.
