The Electoral Commission has announced that Special Voting for Eastern and Western Regions have been postponed to Thursday, 5th December, 2024.

“The Electoral Commission wishes to inform the General Public that Special Voting in Eastern and Western regions has been postponed to Thursday, 5th December, 2024. Political Parties, Security Agencies and the Media are advised. Thank you.” The EC announced.

The postponement comes after the EC was informed that one single defaced ballot paper meant for the Eastern Region had been taken out of the printing house.

Addressing this at an Emergency news conference, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa explained that “The Commission was informed by the National Security that one single defaced ballot paper meant for the Eastern Region had been taken out of the printing house. And I would like to repeat that it was true. One single defaced ballot paper from the presidential election in the Eastern Region had been taken out of the printing house.”

“The printing was undertaken by Chen Point Limited, and as you know it is supervised and observed by the National Investigation Bureau, the National Security, Police,  as well as the agents from political parties and staff of the EC. It is important to note that this single defaced ballot paper had been earmarked for destruction by burning by the company.” She said.

The EC Chairperson added that “For some reason it is found its way out of the printing house. It is also to note that Chen point has had a long history and track record with the Electoral Commission. In the light of this revelation and information from the National Security, the Commission took a decision that in order to ensure and guarantee integrity of the election and the Eastern region, the ballot papers for the Eastern Region should be recalled and new ballot papers printed for the Region.”

“Additionally, it has been agreed by the Commission and all the parties that because the printing house, Checkpoint, also printed Ballot Papers for the Western Region, those ballot papers should also be recalled and reprinted. And I would like to note that this was arrived at by the Commission and the political parties and so there has been agreement.” She indicated.
