Speaker assures health workers of parliamentary support in fight against CMS

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has assured health workers of full parliamentary support in the ongoing fight against Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM).

The Speaker made this assertion when he donated a significant amount of medical supplies, including antibiotics (Ceftriaxone), spinal needles, IV fluids, and other essential medical equipment to the Upper West Regional Health Directorate to support the fight against meningitis popularly called CSM.

The Donations were Received on behalf of The Upper West Regional Health Directorate by Lawyer Charles Lwanga Puozuing, Upper West Regional Minister.

Cerebrospinal Meningitis occurs when there is an acute inflammation of the covering of the brain and the spinal cord. CSM is an epidemic-prone disease with cases reported all year round the world. The first case of Cerebrospinal Meningitis in Ghana was recorded in 1,906 in Cape Coast among laborer’s brought from East Africa to support the British in a war against the Ashantis.

Cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM) cases are rising in the Upper West Region, with infections increasing from 42 to 60 and fatalities reaching 14.

The Speaker expressed concern over the growing cases of CSM, noting that with the right resources and coordination, the disease can be managed and eradicated. He commended health workers for their tireless efforts in treating and preventing the spread of the disease and urged them to continue their work with determination and dedication.

“There’s none of us who is dozing off or sleeping. It is something that we believe we should start working to do away with forever. As they said, it has been changing its form, its nature, its size and all the tricks unknown to man.

“If not, this is not the time we are expecting this onslaught, but here we are under serious attack by the enemy, and so we do all we can to support you, the health workers in the region and in the sector. ” He stated.
