The CEO of Zeera Group of Companies, Alhaji Seidu Agongo, has accused the Akufo-Addo government of deliberately targeting him for imprisonment.
According to Agongo, the government, through former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame, orchestrated efforts to ensure he was jailed, claiming the system was against him.
“When it come to our system, he is supposed to be the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, it means that he needs to give fairness but I think he was directed to nail us, he was directed to jail us by the system
“Once they vote a particular party into power, we have an elected President and Cabinet Ministers and that becomes the system. I think the system didn’t favor me, he was sent to jail me.” He said
Agongo, along with Dr. Stephen Opuni, former CEO of COCOBOD, had faced 27 charges, including defrauding by false pretenses, willfully causing financial loss to the state, money laundering, and corruption by a public officer.
The trial, which began in 2018, focused on allegations that they had procured substandard fertilizers for COCOBOD, allegedly resulting in financial losses to the state.
However, on January 28, the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, formally withdrew all charges against Dr. Opuni and Seidu Agongo.
Speaking on the matter, Agongo alleged that his legal troubles were politically motivated, claiming that state institutions were used against him and Dr. Stephen Opuni in a calculated effort to bring them down.
He asserted that the judicial system had been manipulated to serve the interests of the then ruling government rather than justice.
“The fact is that when you entered into a court, you will know a judge that will give you fair trail. A judge that will tell you that I’m giving you two hours to finish your case, I am giving you 1 month, lawyer Cudjoe you are talking too much.
“You have forgotten that the Attorney General sometimes recommend judges for the President to appoint, my believe is that the system wanted to jail us.” He stated.
