51-year-old seasoned seamstress, Deaconess Mary Adu, has urged young aspiring apprentices learning the trade to be determined and focused on their craft.
She disclosed that, there are many challenges that comes with learning the profession but emphasized that with the right mindset and determination, any apprentice can graduate successfully.
Speaking from her own experience, the accomplished seamstress said while the journey to mastering the trade is not easy, the rewards are significant. In an interview with Bro. Kwakwu on Elvis Anokye TV on YouTube, Deaconess Mary Adu, narrated her ordeal during her apprenticeship days.
She revealed that, her dreams of becoming a nurse was short-lived following the death of her father, which led her to pursue a career as a seamstress. According to her, learning the trade was not easy as she has to combing petty trading with apprenticeship in order to support her mother at home.
Deaconess Mary Adu, further disclosed that she nearly lost hope when her stepsister completed her second cycle education, which led to her questioning her own choices. She wondered whether becoming a seamstress was the best decision and why she couldn’t pursue her dream of becoming a nurse
“I was the only female among five siblings, I initially aspired to become a nurse, but my father passed away along the way, and I had to shift my dream to becoming a seamstress.
“It wasn’t easy for me to learn the trade because I also had to work to support my mother, so I was into petty trading while undergoing apprenticeship as a seamstress.
“At one point, I completely lost hope because one of my stepsisters was able to continue her education. I started questioning myself, wondering why I couldn’t pursue my dream of becoming a nurse but thanks to the advice and support from people close to me, I managed to graduate as a seamstress and am now enjoying my profession.” She said.
The seasoned seamstress recounted how her seniors at the shop where she was learning the trade tried to negatively influence her, even going as far as attempting to set her up with a man to sleep with her.
“My seniors during my apprenticeship tried to introduce me to a certain lifestyle that would have distracted me from learning what I was there for. I was the 20th apprentice at the place where I learned the trade.
“They attempted to influence me into adultery and even arranged for a man to sleep with me without my knowledge. But, thank God, I was able to escape that situation.” Deaconess Mary Adu recounted.
She urged young aspiring apprentices in the seamstress trade to hold fast to their beliefs and remain focused on learning the craft, as this is the only assured way to success.
Despite the numerous challenges she faced as an apprentice, Deaconess Mary Adu now enjoys the rewards of her hard work and has become an inspiration to many young apprentices seeking to make a name for themselves in the seamstress profession. In her 30-year career as a seamstress, she has trained 65 young girls in the trade, with 45 successfully graduating.
