Sam George orders closure of seven radio stations

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has ordered the closure of seven radio stations with immediate effect.

The move, according to the Minister, is to ensure strict adherence with the law concerning frequency authorisations.

Sam George said, one of the stations was closed down on national security grounds and the six others were cases on the grounds of broadcasting without a valid frequency authorisation based on the recently requested frequency audit.

“Today, in two separate cases, I have directed the @NCA Ghana to suspend and enforce a prohibition of broadcast on seven (7) radio stations in total.  In one instance, on national security grounds and in six other cases on the grounds of broadcasting without a valid frequency authorisation based on the recently requested frequency audit. Enforcement of the directive is immediate. Further action would be taken in the coming days.” The Minister announced on X.

The Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram urged all media houses to ensure they are complying with ALL the terms of their frequency authorisations.

“Once again, I reiterate my commitment to sanitising our airwaves and ensuring strict adherence with the law concerning frequency authorisations. I urge all media houses to ensure they are complying with ALL the terms of their frequency authorisations. In service to God and Country.” Part of the post read.

He explained that ” The directive to shut down the stations is issued in accordance with Section 13(1)(e) of the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775), which empowered the National Communication Authority (NCA) to suspend or revoke frequency authorisations in the interest of National Security, public order or the public interest.”
