The Member of Parliament for the Salaga-South Constituency has taken a major step toward strengthening the fight against drug abuse in the Municipality, following a high-level engagement with the Narcotic Control Commission (NCC) on the proposed establishment of a district office in Salaga.
The engagement took place when a delegation from the NCC, led by the Savannah Regional Commander, Madam Patricia Rashida Ewuntomah, paid a working visit to Salaga as part of preparatory activities toward setting up the district office. The visit followed a formal request from the MP’s office, citing the long distance between Salaga and the regional capital, as well as the growing incidence of drug abuse, particularly among the youth.
As part of the visit, the MP and the NCC delegation paid a courtesy call on the Kpembewura, Banbange Ndefoso IV, at his palace in Kpembe to officially brief him on the initiative and seek his blessing. The Kpembewura, speaking on behalf of his chiefs and queen mothers, expressed strong support for the proposal and pledged the full cooperation of traditional authorities to ensure the successful establishment of the office. He raised concern about the increasing rate of drug abuse in the Municipality and its destructive impact on the youth.
Addressing the palace gathering, Madam Patricia Rashida Ewuntomah described the request for a district office as timely and necessary, noting that the distance to the regional capital has affected the effective delivery of NCC services. She assured the traditional leadership that the Commission will work closely with the MP, the Municipal Assembly, and other stakeholders once the office becomes operational.
The delegation later inspected a temporary office space at the Business Resource Centre, which has been earmarked for the proposed district office. The regional team expressed satisfaction with the facility and indicated that steps would be taken to expedite the process.
In his remarks, the MP expressed appreciation to the NCC team for their swift response, stressing that Salaga has become a hotspot for drug abuse and illicit drug activities. He noted that the establishment of a district office will significantly enhance public education, enforcement, and youth sensitization efforts.
The MP further thanked the Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mubarak, for his support, and commended the Savannah Regional NCC for their commitment to safeguarding the future of the youth in the Salaga-South Constituency.
