Resident of Kasoa files injunction against UCC Vice Chancellor’s tenure renewal

A resident of Kasoa in the Awutu Senya East Municipal District of the Central Region of Ghana, John Mevemeo, has filed a lawsuit against the Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong.

Mr. Mevemeo, In his lawsuit, is seeking an interlocutory injunction to prevent Prof. Boampong from portraying himself as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast when his current term expires.

John Mevemeo believes it is against Article 199(1) of the Constitution and statutes 8.15 and 8.16 of the UCC statutes 2016 for Prof. Boampong to remains renewal as Vice Chancellor  of the University after July 31, 2024, when his tenure of office comes to an end.

He believes that the idea to renew the Vice Chancellor’s mandate is unconstitutional and violates the statutes governing the university and therefore prays for the court to restrain him from going beyond his initial tenure of office as the Vice Chancellor of the University.

Mr. Mevemeo further noted that, the University of Cape Coast, without its current Vice Chancellor, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, will run smoothly without facing any hardship or challenges and therefore don’t know why the university’s Council is pushing for the renewal of the tenure of office for Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong.

“The university will not suffer any hardship if the Vice Chancellor is restrained from performing his duties after his current tenure ends on July 31, 2024,” He disclosed.

He further argued that Prof. Nyarko-Boampong  is due for retirement by September 18, 2025 since he was born on September 18, 1965, therefore making the proposed extension to July 31, 2026, illegal.
