Former Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Member of Parliament for Suame, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has raised concerns over the establishment of the ORAL Committee, describing it as a dangerous precedent for the country.
According to him, at the time the committee was set up, President John Dramani Mahama was only the President-elect and had not yet been sworn into office. Therefore, he did not have the executive authority to establish such a committee.
“As far as I am concerned, the ORAL Committee is a dangerous precedent for the country. At the time he set up the team, he was only President-elect and had not been sworn in, so executive authority was not in his hands. He did not, at that time, have the authority to set up such a committee,” he stated.
He further criticized accusations of looting, emphasizing that such claims amount to criminal allegations that must be proven in a court of law before being publicly asserted.
“If you say someone has looted something, it means the person has stolen it. Looting is a criminal offense and must be established in a court of competent jurisdiction before making such accusations,” he said
Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsualso pointed out that Ghana’s constitution guarantees the right to own property, either individually or collectively, and that unless it is legally proven that an individual acquired property through illegal means, such claims of looting amount to defamation of character.
“The constitution guarantees the right to own property, either individually or collectively. If you have not established that the person gained those properties illegally, then you cannot claim they have looted. This is serious, and it amounts to defamation of character,” he disclosed
