One person arrested for possession of suspected EC missing Biometric Voter Registration device

One person has been arrested in connection with the missing Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) devices of the Electoral Commission.

According to the Ghana Police Service, the suspect, Yaw Korateng was arrested at Nsawam in the Eastern Region for being in possession of a device suspected to belong to the Electoral Commission.

The suspect who was arrested on Friday, 23rd August, 2024 is currently in Police custody assisting them in investigation.

The Police in a statement said they informed the EC of the arrest and invited them to establish whether or not the device belongs to them.

“The Ghana Police Service today, 23rd August, 2024 arrested suspect Yaw Korateng at Nsawam in the Eastern Region for being in possession of a device suspected to be a property of the Electoral Commission (EC).
The suspect is in Police custody assisting the investigation.”

“As the investigation into this incident continues, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all stakeholders for their continuous support to ensure security, law and order during this election period and beyond.” The police added.

The missing Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) devices have generated a lot of controversies as the minority has raised concerns about the credibility of the 2024 elections.

“The Electoral Commission confirms that seven of the biometric devices have been missing. I urged the CID and the Ghana Police Service to immediately issue a statement giving us the details of their investigations so far. I am concerned and worried because devices in the hands of an unknown person can compromise the future elections that Ghana will have. Who knows whether this is in the hands of a political party and who knows what that political party is doing with it, ” Minority Leader Dr. Kingsley Ato Forson said during a press conference.

The party added that among other things, they will not sign the peace pact because the EC has not been transparent to them about the missing BVR.

“The Electoral Commission has not been opened to us, we suspect that the equipment is not missing and they have been hidden for a specific agenda.” The Chairman of the party, Johnson Asiedu Nketia said.
