Oliver Barker-Vormawor resisted arrest; no personnel beat him – Police clarifies

The Ghana Police Service have denied media reports that the Convener of Democracy Hub, Oliver Barker-Vormawor has been beaten by Police personnel while in cell.

According to the Police, Oliver Barker sustained minor scratches on his right hand after he resisted being transferred to another cell.

“On 19th October 2024, the Police had intelligence that the accused was planning to compromise the security of other inmates and the Police Station. The Police, therefore, decided to transfer him to another cell, but he resisted, after several persecutions. In the attempt to handcuff him, he sustained minor scratches on his right hand. He was then taken to the Hospital, where he was treated and discharged.” The Police said in a statement.

The Police said Oliver and his cohort want to use another means to seek public sympathy.

“The Ghana Police Service wishes to state that the report circulating in the media space that the Ghana Police have beaten Oliver Barker-Vormawor is false and baseless. This is yet another attempt by the accused person and his cohort to court public sympathy. We, therefore, urge the public to disregard it.” Part of the statement read.

POLICE HAVE NOT BEATEN OLIVER BARKER-VORMAWOR

The Ghana Police Service wishes to state that the report circulating in the media space that the Ghana Police have beaten Oliver Barker-Vormawor is false and baseless.

This is yet another attempt by the accused person and his cohort to court public sympathy. We, therefore, urge the public to disregard it.

Meanwhile, in the case being prosecuted by the Office of the Attorney General, the accused person was granted bail by the High Court on Wednesday, 16th October 2024, the sum of Twenty Thousand Ghana cedis (GHC 20,000) with two sureties without justification.

Several attempts by the Police to get the bail executed have proved futile due to the inability of the accused person to procure sureties.

On 19th October 2024, the Police had intelligence that the accused was planning to compromise the security of other inmates and the Police Station. The Police, therefore, decided to transfer him to another cell, but he resisted, after several persecutions. In the attempt to handcuff him, he sustained minor scratches on his right hand. He was then taken to the Hospital, where he was treated and discharged.

We want to assure the public once again, that we will continue to maintain law and order and ensure the protection of all persons including suspects in our custody.
