NPP govt has not promised free cars for teachers – Oppong Nkrumah clarifies

The Minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has clarified that the vice president and presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia did not promise teachers free cars.

During the 2024 manifesto launch, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has promised to provide incentives for teachers and healthcare workers to purchase one vehicle each if the party is re-elected in 2024.

“We will offer incentives for healthcare workers and teachers to buy one vehicle each with engine capacity of up to 1,800 cubic centimetres (cc),” Bawumia said.

But it was alleged that the government has promised one teacher, one car after they failed to fulfil their one teacher one laptop promise.

Clarifying this in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekossi Sen programme, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah stated that Dr. Bawumia never said that.

According to him, they are planning to make import duties and tax free for teachers and nurses who want to buy cars from outside the country within a certain period and capacity of the car.

“There are terms and conditions of that including the capacity of the vehicle you can bring. He said 1,800 cc. In fact, our comtemporation is within a certain period. It is not like a teacher or nurse will take advantage and become a car dealer to bring cars every week. There are guidelines on it so that people will not abuse it the last time.” He said.

“We have learnt from the past, so having a capacity of vehicle you can bring or how many vehicles you can import for a certain period. But we want the Ghanaian nurse or teacher who wants to buy a car and doesn’t want to buy the one manufactured in the country and wants to import to enjoy some tax or duties waivers as part of incentives to them as public servants.” Kojo Oppong explained.

“The point is that the lessons we have learnt from the implementation of the first one is what we want to use to do this without any abuse. I have seen that people are saying the government will give one teacher, one car. He didn’t say that.” He clarified.
