NIA reacts to viral TikTok extortion allegations, launches internal investigation

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has responded to allegations of extortion made in a viral TikTok video by an individual known as “Sefwi Biggest Trapper,” who claimed that officers at the Bono Premium Centre demanded money from him and other applicants.

In a public notice issued by the Authority, the NIA said it had taken note of the circulating video and expressed concern over the allegations. However, the Authority also condemned the behaviour of the claimant, stating that his conduct at the centre on 11th November 2025 created unnecessary tension. Despite this, the Authority emphasised its commitment to transparency and accountability.

“The NIA condemns the conduct of the individual, whose unruly behaviour at the Bono Premium Centre on 11th November 2025 caused unnecessary disruption and posed risks to other applicants. Notwithstanding this, the Executive Secretary, Mr. Wisdom Kwaku Deku, and the Management of the NIA reiterate their firm stance against any form of extortion or misconduct by staff.”

The NIA outlined steps it has taken so far to address the matter. It revealed that several attempts to contact the claimant and his companion, Ms. Appiah Comfort, for further inquiries have failed. The Authority stated, “all efforts have been unsuccessful.”

“The case has since been referred to the NIA’s Internal CID for a full and independent probe, while management is also working to strengthen security at NIA operational centres across the country to protect both staff and applicants.

“The Authority has made several attempts to engage both the claimant and his companion, Ms. Appiah Comfort, to assist in ongoing inquiries; however, all efforts have been unsuccessful.
The matter has been referred to NIA’s Internal CID for a full and independent investigation.”The notice stated.

The Authority urged the claimant to present any evidence he may have to support the investigation and assured the public of firm action. “Appropriate disciplinary and legal action will be taken against any person found culpable upon conclusion of the investigation,” the statement said.

The NIA also used the opportunity to clarify fees charged at Premium Centres, reminding the public that first-time registration costs GHS 310, personal information updates cost GHS 355, and replacement of a lost or damaged card costs GHS 420.
