Neymar: “I nearly joined Bayern in 2013”

Brazilian football superstar Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior, popularly known as Neymar Jnr,  has revealed that he nearly joined Germain football giants Bayern Munich in the summer of 2013.

Speaking on the podcast Podpah, Neymar disclosed that Pep Guardiola visited his hotel room in the middle of the night after the Puskás Award ceremony and tried to convince him to sign for the German record champions.

According to Neymar the former Barcelona manager explained to him in detail the role he would play at Bayern. In his pitch, Guardiola even went as far as promising to make Neymar the best player in the world.

“I almost went to Bayer because of Pep Guardiola. After I won the Puskás Award, my dad kept calling me at 2am. I answered, he told me to open the door I was in boxers. It was my dad, Pep Guardiola and the translator!

“Pep told me, ‘I want to sign you and bring you with me, to whatever club I go to. I will make you the best player in the world’. He shows me a paper, opens his laptop, tells me where I’d play. Pep also said, If you don’t score 60 goals in a season, I’ll change my name.” He said.

Neymar further explained that along with Bayern Munich, Real Madrid also attempted to secure his signature. The Los Blancos laid out an open check in front of him,

At the time, Neymar was one of the most sought-after young talents in world football. Ultimately, he chose to sign with FC Barcelona, where he became part of the iconic MSN trio alongside Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez. His move to the Catalan club proved to be a defining moment in his career, leading to a historic UEFA Champions League triumph in 2015.

Meanwhile, Neymar is currently on a short-term contract at Santos, and is expected to return to European football in the summer.
