The National Association of Institutional Suppliers (NAIS) has called on the Government of Ghana to urgently clear outstanding payments exceeding GH¢23 million owed to its members.

The debt relates to essential school supplies, including uniforms and house dresses, delivered under government contracts over the past two academic years (2022/2023 to 2023/2024).

In a statement, NAIS noted that despite repeated assurances from government authorities, the substantial amount has remained unpaid for over two years. The prolonged delay has reportedly pushed many suppliers “to the brink of collapse,” making it nearly impossible for them to sustain operations or meet financial obligations such as wages, rents, and loans.

While the association expressed gratitude for ongoing dialogue with the Ministry of Education, particularly the Sector Minister, Hon. Haruna Idrissu, the payments remain unsettled, placing undue hardship on suppliers.

“NAIS members are essential for ensuring students receive the uniforms and materials they need. We are ready to continue supporting the government’s vision for quality education, but our businesses require financial stability to do so.” The statement said.

The association further highlighted the commitment of its members, noting that despite the financial strain and outstanding debts, the majority continued to supply goods for the 2024/2025 academic year under immense pressure. This demonstrates their dedication as key partners in the nation’s education system.

NAIS is urging the government to prioritize and expedite the settlement of these payments to prevent further financial distress, while reaffirming its commitment to collaborate in supporting the country’s educational goals.
