President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has set up a 5-member ministerial ad-hoc committee to assess galamsey fights in the country.

Recently, Ghanaians have raised their concerns over the impact of illegal mining populary, known as galamsey in the country.

Many water bodies and forest reserves have been affected by the illegal mining, raising health concerns and a possible water crisis shortly in the future.

In a release signed by Minister for Information, Fatima Abubakar said “On the instruction of the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, an Adhoc Ministerial Committee has been set up to engage all stakeholders to assess government’s efforts in dealing with illegal mining in Ghana.”

The Committee led by National Security Minister Albert Kan-Dapaah, and other Members include:

Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor,

Minister for Defense, Dominic Nitiwul,

Minister for Employment, Labour Relations and Development, Ignatius Baffour Awuah,

Minister for Information, Fatima Abubakar.

The Committee will ascertain the efforts by the government in the fight against galamsey and how to deal with the menace by engaging all stakeholders.

The Albert Kan-Dapaah Committee will seek to ensure that the concerns of Ghanaians are addressed.

President Nana Akufo-Addo vowed to fight galamsey by all efforts including Task Force to curb the illegal mining proved unsuccessful.

The government earlier set up an inter-ministerial task force against illegal mining led by the former Environment and Science Minister Prof. Kwabena Frimpong Boateng but could not win the fight against illegal mining.

Many people have attributed the government’s failure to tackle illegal mining to alleged involvement of government officials in galamsey.
