Former President John Dramani Mahama has responded to president Akufo-Addo statement that he (Mahama) should come out clearly on his position on Free SHS and galamsey.

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) said he has made several comments on different platforms about how the NDC will tackle small scale mining and illegal mining (galamsey) activities in Ghana as well as Free SHS policy.

According to him, either president Akufo-Addo is sleeping or not living in the country that is why he has not heard his position on the two issues.

“President Akufo-Addo said I should come out clearly on galamsey. It looks like he doesn’t live in this country because I have commented on galamsey over and over again. The University of Energy and Natural Resources gave political leaders the platform to outline their policy on small-scale mining and for a whole hour, I outlined the policy and there were questions and answers for two hours. We were there for three hours, so he should just tell his Flagstaff House media to get him the tape of what I said at the  University of Energy and Natural Resources.” Mr. Mahama told his supporters in the Ningo Prampram Constituency.

“Recently when I met the Christian Community, a part of my speech and the question and answers was again on galamsey and small scale mining. I have said a lot, it is his responsibility, the people of Ghana elected him, he is currently the president of Ghana and it is his responsibility to deal with galamsey now. I know that after 7th January, 2025 when Ghanaians have voted for me, I will take that responsibility.”

“He also asked me to come out clearly on my policy on Free SHS. Again, he is not in this country or he has been sleeping. Because I have made it clear that there are implementation problems with the Free SHS. First, there is no dedicated source of funding. Second, parents are also not happy with the double track system. Third, the quality of food the children are being given is not good. And so I have said that the NDC is going to come and fix these three things.” Mahama hit back.
