The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has announced that Morocco will no longer host the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
The Confédération Africaine de Football (“CAF”) Executive Committee (“EXCO”) on Friday, 21 June 2024 announced the dates of Africa’s most popular and competitive football competition, the CAF TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (“AFCON”) alongside the Women Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) which will were expected to take place in Morocco
The WAFCON is expected to kickstart on Saturday, 5 July, 2025 and ends on Saturday, 26 July, 2025 while the AFCON is expected to start on Sunday, 21 December, 2025 and ends on Sunday 18th January, 2026.
However, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, has announced that due to logistical constraints in hosting both prestigious tournaments in the same year, they will no longer host Africa’s most popular and competitive women’s football competition.
According to the FRMF, hosting both tournaments in the same year will put a significant strain on the country’s resources and infrastructure.
In the meantime, the South African Football Association (SAFA), has stepped in and pushed to host the tournament in South Africa.
WAFCON was also hosted by Morocco in 2022.
Announcing the date for WAFCON, the president Confédération Africaine de Football (“CAF”), Dr Patrice Motsepe stated that he was impressed by the enormous growth of Women’s Football in Africa.
He also expressed optimism that the CAF TotalEnergies WAFCON Morocco 2024 would be immensely successful.
“I am also impressed by the enormous growth of Women’s Football in Africa and I am expecting the CAF TotalEnergies WAFCON Morocco 2024 to be immensely successful.” Dr Patrice Motsepe stated.
