The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has assured that kidney dialysis will be made free for all patients under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

He explained that six month ago, there was a piloting for kidney dialysis patients and those who were above sixty (60) years and below eighteen (18) years were given free medication but now the piloting has ended so kidney dialysis has been included for free health care under the NHIS starting from 1st December.

He said the NHIS nearly collapsed under the NDC government but the current administration has put in more efforts to make it functioning.

“The National Health Insurance was at the verge of collapsing, when we came to power, we invested money to improve the National Health Insurance. And there are some diseases that were not covered under the NHIS but we have added those diseases to the National Health Insurance.” Dr. Bawumia said this during his campaign tour in the Old Tafo constituency in the Ashanti region.

“Childhood cancer. Today, children with cancer are receiving free treatment under National Health Insurance. Secondly, sickle cell patients are getting free treatment under National Health Insurance. And the third point is kidney dialysis, many people are suffering from kidney problems and they need dialysis but it is very expensive for many people to afford it. So six month ago, we started piloting to include kidney dialysis under National Health Insurance.” He added.

“So people above sixty years and children under 18 years were taking the kidney dialysis free. Now the piloting has ended so from December 1, all kidney dialysis patients will receive free treatment under National Health Insurance. ” The Vice President said.

According to him, it has become necessary for kidney dialysis to be included under National Health Insurance to ensure that all patients receive free medication because the dialysis is very expensive.
