The National Communications Officer of the largest opposition, National Democratic Congress (NDC) Lawyer Sammy Gyamfi has said, the timing of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to build a new headquarters is wrong.

He explained that Ghana is currently facing an economic crisis so BoG should have considered the current situation in the country.

“The timing of the project is wrong, even if they (BoG) need a new headquarters, it is not this time” Sammy Gyamfi stated on UTV’s Mpu ne Mpu show.

“US$250 million for one building, in a country like Ghana, in this critical time? Why are you building a new Heaven?”

His comment came after the Bank of Ghana confirmed that  it is in the process of building a new headquarters in Ridge, a suburb of Accra.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) earlier in a press conference stated that the said building was costing the taxpayer 250 million dollars.

Responding to the Minority, the Bank of Ghana in a statement said, “A structural integrity assessment conducted by the BoG revealed that the current BoG Head Office building, built by the Nkrumah Government in the early 1960s, is no longer fit for purpose and could not stand any major earth tremors.

But Sammy Gyamfi believes earth tremors are not a threat to the Bank of Ghana.

“In these difficult times, when we are supposed to take measures to mitigate the impact of the harsh economic conditions, they are making the construction of a building their priority. Even after recording huge losses the previous year?” a baffled Sammy Gyamfi contended.
