A former WBC International titleholder, Ayitey Powers has said racism contributed a lot in his failure to win international bouts.
He said whenever he is fighting, he only meets white people and his coach is even a white person which makes it difficult for him to win.
According to the veteran Ghanaian boxer, the referees usually make unanimous decisions in favour of his white opponents.
“If you look at my records, I lost a lot because I was fighting outside. Because I am black, sometimes when I was going to fight, I wouldn’t see any black man there. Even my coach is white and all the people around are white so definitely the referee will give a unanimous decision.” He said.
Speaking in an interview with TV3, Ayitey Powers stated that in some cases the supporters of his white opponents make a lot of noise to increase their strength but even if he hits his opponent everybody will be silent.
He also lamented the insult Ghanaians give their boxers if they make a small mistake.
“I went outside London and fought, where I reached you could see that even their veins were white. When I hit my opponent you could see everywhere it was quiet but when my opponent hit me there was a lot of noise. The problem here is that Ghanaians when our boxer is fighting and there is a small mistake they will be insulting you but go outside and see how they are doing to their boxers.” Ayitey Powers lamented.
He revealed that renowned Ghanaian boxer Bukom Banko beat people out of anger due to the level of insults they give them.
“That is why Banku is beating them but I don’t care. I fought and took my money but you are insulting me.” He stated
